What Is Medicare?

Medicare insurance is federally provided healthcare coverage that is available to certain individuals. Created in 1965, it was originally designed to provide health insurance for Americans who were age 65 or older. The program was expanded in 1972 to provide coverage for those who have permanent disabilities including End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Roughly 60 million Americans are covered by Medicare currently and there are five different types of coverage available.

What Medicare Coverage Is Available?

Part A and Part B

Medicare Part A is often called “hospital insurance.” This is because it covers many of the expenses associated with inpatient care in a hospital. Part A also covers skilled nursing facility care that meets certain criteria, inpatient care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and home health care.

Medicare Part B is often referred to as “medical insurance” because it covers many of the expenses associated with outpatient care. These expenses include medically necessary services or supplies that are needed to treat or diagnose your condition as well as preventive health care services like flu shots and physicals.

There are a few medical expenses that are not covered under Part A and Part B. These include:

  • Long-term care
  • Most dental care, including dentures
  • Eye exams for the purpose of prescribing glasses
  • Hearing aids and exams for fitting
  • Acupuncture
  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Routine foot care

Part C

Otherwise known as Medicare Advantage, this type of Medicare coverage is provided by private health insurance companies and is often thought of as an “all-in-one” alternative to Original Medicare. These plans bundle three types of Medicare coverage together including:

  • Part A (hospital insurance)
  • Part B (medical insurance)
  • Part D (prescription insurance)

In addition to the above coverages, Medicare Advantage Plans offer additional coverages that are not offered by Part A and B such as vision, hearing, and dental.

Part D

Medicare Part D is often referred to as “prescription insurance” because it offers coverage for prescription drugs. This coverage is provided through private health plans and participants often benefit from substantial price breaks on approved medications. If you’re curious about what types of medications are covered by Medicare Part D, the Medicare website is an excellent resource.

Medigap

Ideally, Original Medicare would cover all of an individual’s medical-related expenses. Since it does not, individuals have the option of buying Medicare Supplement Insurance, which is also referred to as Medicap. There are 10 different Medigap plans available to Americans, each of which is designed to fill certain gaps in coverage left by Original Medicare. Have questions about Medigap coverage?
